Mahjong is a traditional four-player game that is highly regarded in China and played worldwide, including in the prestigious World Series of Mahjong. The objective of Mahjong is to gather four sequences or triplets, each consisting of three tiles, along with a pair of matching tiles. The first player to accomplish this wins the game. In addition to sequences and triplets, there are special points that players can aim for to gain an advantage.

During gameplay, the dealer starts by discarding an unused tile, which can be claimed by the other three players. The player on the right of the dealer has the option to chow (gather a sequence), pong (gather a triplet), or kong (gather a closed triplet) the discarded tile, while the other two players can only pong or kong it. Chow and pong actions can only be taken if the player already has two tiles of the corresponding sequence or triplet. If no player chows, pongs, or kongs, the opponent on the right can draw a tile from the stack. Kong can also be declared if a player has an exposed or closed triplet and draws a matching tile. After any action, a discarded tile must be placed back into play to maintain 13 tiles in hand.

The game progresses until a player has gathered all necessary tiles except for one to achieve a winning hand. At this point, the player is in the ready hand stage and can declare a win if anyone discards or they draw the missing tile. Multiple necessary tiles can be waited upon, providing more opportunities for victory.
